The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – truly, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the leader try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the quickly increasing segment within America might have little sense of him since they are skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly definitely not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for others, specifically for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater as well.
The obvious and straightforward truth that the Savior from scripture calls for a type of radical love centered on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith rather a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the steadfast resistance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We must have to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities of American history.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?
America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it mean pretending the most negative regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both modesty and faith, a mixture that genuine national faithful should embrace.
